Toughbook F8

Nov 18,2008

The fashionable silver-and-black design of the Toughbook F8 belies its inner strength. What looks like a standard laptop with a 14.1-inch screen and DVD drive is actually a beast from Panasonic, able to withstand drops from about five feet, or 1.5 meters, and is water resistant. It's hardened case can also withstand more than 220 pounds, or 100 kilograms, of weight. The F8 comes with 3 gigabytes of memory and includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optional cellular networking. It weighs a mere 3.7 pounds, about a pound more than the MacBook Air. It also has a carrying handle and is clad in ultralight magnesium alloy. It comes with a shock-mounted 160-gigabyte hard drive and a DVD burner hidden under the keyboard. The F8 actually has drainage holes that let water flow through the keyboard and out through the bottom of the laptop. The ports, including external video and three USB 2.0 connectors, are covered in thick rubber caps for further protection. The rugged laptop starts at $2,500, a little pricey for those who coddle their laptops, but worth every penny for those who have the tendency to sit on their laptops every once in a while.
